What are the responsibilities and duties of the role?  Its scope?

Be thorough.

Consider what was lacking or stellar in the last person who occupied it.

Next, what are the skills and capacities necessary for success?

Which of those must someone come already equipped with and which can be learned/stretched toward/coached over time?

Be careful not to neglect or underestimate the most often overlooked: leadership, influence, and delivering results.

The more responsible and visible the role, the more crucial.

Without the skills and capacity to bring people along, build a robust, effective, and accountable team (what I call Self-Correcting℠), and manage up and across (and the Board) with influence, delivering results – and fulfilling the responsibilities of the role — isn’t possible.
