When talking with clients about leadership, I often use the metaphor of running a marathon.

To lead is to place oneself in a race of stamina.

What we’re experiencing now, however, is something more demanding than a marathon run at top speed.

And.

We don’t yet have a finish line.

So how do we run?

It will be those leaders who pace themselves — who understand that they must sustain in equal measure to persevere, who connect with the opportunity to create meaning for their people and their organizations to rise to a greater occasion, who have trusted spaces where they can share their concerns, who are able to ground and center themselves and find their way back when they’re not, who look for —  and illuminate — successes and communicate them as mile markers to all throughout their organizations, who actively seek out creative ideas from every corner of their businesses and craft smart experiments — it is those leaders who will cross the finish line having run a superior race.

We don’t know at what mile this race will conclude.

But we do choose how we run.
