This is something that my favorite barre teacher, Maureen, likes to say.

And she usually says it when there is nothing still going on, not in my brain, and definitely not in my muscles.  They’re shaking from fatigue, and I’m concentrating – very hard – on how very hard it is to stay with whatever it is we’re doing.

But that Maureen knows what she’s doing.

And if I’ve heard her, over the roar of my mind and the music, something shifts.

The pose remains strenuous.  That doesn’t change.

But my focus does.

I begin to seek stillness, to look for it.

And there, despite the physical and mental riot, I find a small measure of calm inside.

And a bit more stamina.

Not a bad combination for meeting difficult challenges.
