One of the most common patterns I see among clients preparing to ascend to the highest levels in their organizations, is being captivated by the idea of a particular role rather than assessing the role, itself.
Sometimes, that works out just fine. The new position is a good-enough fit and/or it positions them for an even bigger opportunity later on.
But, sometimes, there is an alternate and more suitable path that’s neglected or overlooked. One that not only better fits their talents, gifts, and experience, but would be more fulfilling.
So, when clients are surveying the landscape of opportunity in front of them, I suggest the following:
- Filter and measure opportunities through a spectrum of drudgery on one end and curiosity on the other, using past roles and experiences (both personal and professional) to establish what that scale feels like, aiming in the direction of curiosity.
- Think beyond this immediate move to what it positions you for next and whether that’s the direction that’s wanted.
- Solicit input from superiors on what opportunities you might be well-suited for, particularly opportunities that might be outside your current trajectory.
- Evaluate the skills, leadership capacities, relationship building, and travel of the roles and if there’s alignment for you with the first suggestion above.
- Consider both the near term of 18+ months, but also the longer term of 3-5 years.
- Think uncomfortably bigger.

One way to plan for life after corporate is to think about it in the margins, watch your runway grow ever shorter, and then try to find something(s) of interest after the door closes.
Another is to give yourself the gift of time to dream and explore and plan in an immersive program with a highly-curated group of peers who are asking similar questions about soul-nourishing work and creating fulfilling lives in the next chapter.
Come awaken dreams, stretch your thinking, get coaching directly from me tailored to your specific situation, find support and camaraderie among fellow travelers, enjoy gourmet meals, relax in beautiful surroundings, and, yes, make a plan.
