If succession is not among your top 3 priorities, it has you fooled, lulled you into believing that it’s not urgent.
And it might not be.
Not with the fires you’re fighting.
But that’s because succession has disguised itself as something long term, something for the future.
Until your star performer leaves and no one can replace them; or among the members of your senior leadership team, none has deputies that can assume most of their responsibilities in a crunch, or worse, crisis; or there is no plan for your own succession that will ensure a smooth transition that disrupts your organization’s momentum as little as possible and will leave everyone feeling that the company is in good hands.
And then succession becomes the wolf at the door.
And the future becomes now.
