We just finished the new ventures launch at UNC’s Kenan Flagler B-School this weekend.  It’s an intense,  fast-paced program for EMBA students who fly in from all over the US to attend these weekend sessions.  Most are working full time jobs.  Many have families.   Some are already working in their ventures.

Each venture is examined from multiple angles: value prop, business model, financials, venture pitch, available market, marketing, potential to scale, etc.  You get the idea.  They’re under a microscope.

But after coaching in the program for eight years, I’ve observed an ingredient of success that can’t be found on paper:

Hustle.

Which I define as that special alchemy of determination, energy, resilience, ingenuity, and passion that propels us to action.

Without it, the inevitable setbacks, particularly those that are unforeseen, can sink the captain, and therefore, the ship.
