I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what propels some people to take action and others not, specifically in the context stretching toward more and better, whatever that might be.
As an example, I see a consistent pattern among audience members when I deliver a keynote. Almost all will report leaving re-invigorated and excited by what can be, equipped with practical tools.
And most will not do much about it; they’ll slip back into the inertia of life.
So what happens between inspiration and inertia?
Because some will take the next step.
And then another.
And create a new momentum that moves them toward results.
Below you’ll find a template of sorts for how you can do the same:
- Listen – to yourself – for what’s calling, for where you’re pulled, for what you want
- Commit to following your curiosity even if the full picture isn’t in view
- Accept that there are many stones in the path and the right one is the next one
- Appreciate that the time is now, not in the future
- Know that you only have to be ready to begin and not for how it all unfolds
- Understand that there will be setbacks, as there are in anything worthwhile (and that overcoming them is part of building greater confidence and momentum; you’ll be more proud of yourself and self-assured than if they hadn’t come along)
- Monitor your mindset. Limiting beliefs are sneaky. We all have them and they can be quite powerful if not worked with. As just one example, a limiting belief might come in the form of a question (See? ): “Who do you think you are?”
- Seek evidence for what you want as possible; look for others who have done it
- Seek evidence that you are making it happen, and write down every piece, no matter how seemingly small
- Recognize that no one does anything alone; find support and guidance
- Regard any financial output toward your goals as an investment rather than an expense. This is a critical part of mindset and is a defining hallmark of successful people. They invest in themselves. And they don’t wait.
